[break][break] it was not something that she talked about often, or ever, but it was something that somehow still dictated her every life, her ever decision. she clutched her purse as she waited in line at star-boks coffee, just a block away from where she lived. she swallowed as she stared up at the menu.

[break][break] java chip frap, vanilla bean frap, matcha green tea latte...

[break][break] there were so many questions, it felt impossible to choose. by her side, her sylveon curled a ribbon around her ankle, an attempt to steady her, but it still failed to propel her forward.

[break][break] mari stared at the menu, so focused on choosing, that she hadn't realized that the line had moved up without her. or that the people behind her were beginning to grow agitated.

Julien was one of the people queued up behind Marilee. In fact, he stood directly behind her. He had come to Lilycove to look into the status of the city's vacant gym, a task made easier by the promise of coffee.[break][break]

However, coffee on the go meant Star-boks instead of his usual custom brews. And that was how he found himself watching the young woman before him with rapidly fraying patience.[break][break]

Leaning forward slightly, Julien said to her in a firm tone, "May I make a recommendation, miss?"[break][break]

His words carried an edge, making them sound more like an order and less like an offer. His accent, too, came out in full force. Anyone in earshot could immediately identify him as a native Kalosian.[break][break]

"The iced blonde vanilla latte is very nice. Not too sweet, and perfect for a warm day like today."

[break][break] The sudden voice behind him, low and elegant, made Mari spook. A shiver ran up her spine as she let out a squeak, turning towards eyes of topaz that stared down at her intimidatingly.

[break][break] "I..! S-S-Sorry!"

[break][break] Apologies stumbled out of her lips and she jerked forward as if he'd pushed her, stumbling towards the cashier.

[break][break] "Uhm. Ah! A Blond Vanilla Latte!"

[break][break] Iced or Hot?

[break][break] Nervously, her eyes swiveled back towards the handsome man behind her, before back to the boy taking her order.

The young woman ordered Julien's suggestion hot, not iced, but he thought nothing of it. After she paid and moved aside, he stepped up to the register to place his own order.[break][break]

"An iced Caffè Americano, tall," he said, holding his phone up to the scanner to pay by card. The machine beeped, and the boy behind the register scribbled the order on a plastic takeaway cup.[break][break]

Julien stood next to the woman from before. He would have waited in silence, but his phone buzzed as a call came through from the Kalosian embassy.[break][break]

"Julien speaking," he said after picking up the call, the greeting automatic and formal. At once, the staff member on the other end started speaking rapid Kalosian. They had finished interviewing the last of potential hires for Julien's secretary.[break][break]

The ambassador responded in Kalosian, more comfortable talking in his mother tongue than the lingua franca of the region. "I see. Then please have the résumés forwarded to my desk. I wish to review them."

[break][break] With her order done, she squeaked as the man behind her strode to the front. He was confident and assured in a way that Mari thought she could never be, but she couldn't help but stare at him in part-admiration and part-awe as he so fearlessly declared power over the Big Evil Drink Menu.

[break][break] She swallowed, shuffling to the side, and was content to spend the rest of this moment in awkward, tense silence until their drink arrived when his deep voice rumbled in her ear. She gave a small jump, before realizing that he was on the phone.

[break][break] 'Kalosian...?'

[break][break] "Are you Kalosian?" she blurted, before realizing the error of her ways. How rude was she?! "Ah- I'm sorry. Nevermind! I'm just... going to stand over here." Mari mumbled the last bit, steeping her fingers against her skirt before shuffling to the side.

An outburst from the woman in line before him caused Julien to cast her a sideways glance. He hung up the phone without another word spoken into it, then slipped it into his pocket.[break][break]

"I am," he replied, turning his head to regard her. She was a slight and nervous creature, clearly unpracticed with social interactions. But her appearance was tidy. Her eyes were a bright and innocent blue, and the pretty blush that colored her cheeks improved her complexion.[break][break]

She seemed intent on hiding from him, but in the open café, there was nowhere to hide.[break][break]

"Have you been to Kalos?" he asked, if only to make idle conversation. He didn't care to make her feel more at ease, but simple conversation tended to do that anyway for most people.[break][break]

One of the baristas stepped toward the pick-up counter, carrying a hot blonde vanilla latte and calling out the woman's order number.

[break][break] The steady, sure way that the man looked at her was enough to send shivers down her spine. So much for hiding in the corner. She swallowed thickly, fingers pressed against her skirt as she attempted to stammer out a reply.

[break][break] "No! Yes! I mean - um - "

[break][break] Crap. She was messing all of this up.

[break][break] "Yes, I graduated from Lumiose University, sir. And I'm from Ambrette City," she said in an unmistakable, perfect Kalosian accent, her words coming across elegant and smooth in her native tongue.

[break][break] It was where Nana had raised her, up until she'd had to go to Lumiose for school and then later, when her career fell apart, to Hoenn.

[break][break] "Are you —"

[break][break] Before she could finish her reply, however, they called for her. Mari started again, apologies spilling from her lips as she ducked her head at Julien Demassieux , before stumbling towards the barista to do the same. In the middle of her stammering apologies, they called for Julien too. Her hands reached for - rather than her cup - his cup, and then pulled back sharply when she realized the coaster wasn't on it yet.

[break][break] She hadn't even realized yet that the cup she was putting the coaster on and then taking a sip of read Julien.

Julien's demeanor shifted subtly when the woman responded in fluent Kalosian. Recognition entered his eyes, and he made an incremental turn toward her, opening up his body language. Yet before she could finish her statement, the barista's call interrupted her. He watched as the woman reached out her hand…[break][break]

…and then slipped a paper coaster onto his iced drink.[break][break]

And then drank from it.[break][break]

Stifling a reprimand, Julien took a smooth step toward the counter and picked up her drink instead. He read her name on the paper cup: Mari.[break][break]

"Miss Mari," he said, continuing in Kalosian, a tightness entering his voice that hadn't been there before. Holding out her drink, he showed her where her name had been written. "I believe this is your latte."

She was so nervous she could barely feel the plastic cup in her hand, let alone read or notice the fact that she had made the worst, possibly most horrible mistake of her future career.

[break][break] Miss Mari.

[break][break] His low, rumbling tenor reached her ears and she flinched. Whether it was because of his voice, or the sternness of it, or the fact that his Iced Americano was - in fact - very bitter. And not at all like the sweet, summer drink that she'd promised.

[break][break] Like a rabbit caught in snare, her eyes flitted towards his in a panic. Then the drink. Then him.

[break][break] "Oh my god."

[break][break] "Ohmygod."

[break][break] Merde, what had she just done?

[break][break] "Oh god, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry! I didn't mean - I'm so embarrassed," she squeaked, slipping in-between her Hoenn dialect and her Kalosian one, "I can buy you a new one! Let me please —" She fumbled, but in her nervousness squeaked the plastic lid a bit too tightly, until iced coffee began spewing out like a fountain.

Before Julien could protest Mari's request to buy him a new drink, she squeezed the plastic cup of his Caffè Americano so hard that the lid popped off and the liquid splashed out of it.[break][break]

Onto him.[break][break]

Onto his bespoke suit, pristine white shirt, and silk tie.[break][break]

Julien froze, too bewildered by the woman's level of sheer clumsiness. He had not imagined, in his wildest dreams, that a single person could achieve such an egregious level of offense. His hand around her piping hot drink trembled with barely contained rage as he lowered it to safety on the pick-up counter.[break][break]

A barista rushed over with a roll of paper towels, ripping sections off the roll and shoving them toward Julien. He barely registered the assistance. For a long moment, all he could do was stare with wide-eyed, tight-jawed fury at the young woman who had spilled his coffee all over him.[break][break]

And then, in a blink, the anger vanished from his face. He accepted the paper towels and started to dab at his clothing. "No need," he said to Mari, an iciness lingering in his voice, even as he forced a polite smile. "I believe you're running late for your appointment, no? You should go."[break][break]

Julien did not know her schedule. It was a dismissal, one that spared Mari from embarrassing herself further.
